Mrs. Edith Key Gordon, age 87, passed away Friday, May 6, 2011 at Village Care, King, NC. Edith was born April 28, 1924 in Moore County, NC to Sidney Russell Key and Minnie Mooney Key. She was a middle child of ten brothers and sisters. The family later lived in Pilot Mountain, NC where Edith was a good student and a standout high school basketball player. During World War II while her fiancé served overseas, Edith worked at the NC Shipbuilding Company in Wilmington. She and Wallace R. Gordon were married April 27, 1946 and shared 62 years together before his death in 2009. The couple lived on the family farm in Pinnacle, NC until daughter Sharon Key Gordon was born in 1947. The young family then moved to Winston-Salem, NC where sons Wallace Reece Gordon, Jr. and Roger Dean Gordon were born in 1951 and 1954. Edith was an active member of Green Street Methodist and New Hope Methodist churches. She retired from AT&T in1989 as an editor. Edith was kind and patient, loving and generous, warm and creative. She loved to read and was a good cook and baker. She enjoyed gardening and homemaking. She won a blue ribbon at the Dixie Classic Fair for a quilt she made by hand. She took time to remember people's birthdays, was a good bridge player, and a faithful writer of letters. Edith awoke early each day to read her devotions and took frequent advantage of the benefits of a quick catnap. She was a good daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, mother-in-law, grandmother, and friend. She was happiest when in the presence of her family. Edith was preceded in death by her parents, husband Wallace Reece Gordon, son Roger Dean Gordon, brothers Russell Radford Key, Hugh Lloyd Key, and Charles Alexander Key and sisters Opal Irene Key and Estelle Victoria Key. She is survived by daughter, Sharon Gordon Penley and husband Charles, of Mayodan, NC; son Wallace Reece Gordon, Jr. and wife Anne of Greensboro, NC; granddaughter Meredith Gordon Macy of Boston, MA; grandsons Adam Franklin Macy of Charleston, SC; Travis Reece Gordon of Nashville, TN; and Miles Roland Gordon and wife Lauren, of Greensboro, NC. Surviving siblings are Kathlyn Key Hauser of Winston-Salem, NC; Jenny Key Rutledge of Burlington, NC; Carole Key Merritt and husband Earl, of Jamestown, NC; and Helen Christine Key of Pilot Mountain, NC. She was admired and love by many nieces and nephews. Funeral servies will be held at New Hope United Methodist Church, 5125 Shattalon Drive in Winston-Salem, NC at 11:00 AM Monday, May 9th. The family will receive friends in the church Fellowship Hall one hour before the service. Dr. Pete Taylor and Rev. Charles Penley will officiate. Burial will be at Forsyth Memorial Park.
