Edgar Smith

Mr. Edgar Allen Smith, 77, passed away on Wednesday, October 26, 2022, following a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Donnie and Thomas F. Smith; his mother, Mary Magdaline Hall Lawson and his step-father, Ernie B. Lawson. Allen graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College (now Appalachian State University) where he also played baseball. He retired from U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Allen was an avid golfer as long as his health permitted and a former long-time member of Pine Brook Country Club (now Maple Chase Golf and Country Club). He is survived by his wife, Judy; his daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Andy Berry of Belmont, NC; and two granddaughters, who were the light of his life, Haley Berry of Denton, TX and Emily Berry of Belmont, NC. Allen is also survived by sisters-in-law, Linda H. Parker (Bobby), Sharron H. Unser (Dave) and Genene H. Watson; brothers-in-law, Vic Hutcherson (Karen), Joe Hutcherson (Dee), Mike Hutcherson (Carol) and Larry Starling (Gwyn); and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall with Rev. Bruce Updyke officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the cemetery. Allen’s wish was that if any memorials go to the First Tee-Central Carolina, P.O. Box 236, Clemmons, NC 27012 or to the charity of the donor’s choice. The family would like to thank the staff of Universal Healthcare of King for the care and kindness they gave to Allen while he was a patient there and to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care of Pilot Mountain, NC for their care and support.
