Earsley Hege Mendenhall, 95, of Winston-Salem passed away peacefully at her daughter's home near Charlotte on March 28, 2009, after an extended illness. She was born on September 12, 1913 in the Arcadia community of Davidson County to the late Manie and Letha Clinard Hege. Earsley graduated from High Point College in 1940. She taught school for 37 years in Davidson County and in Forsyth County. She retired from Griffith Elementary School in 1975. She touched many lives in her role as a teacher. In addition to her parents, Earsley was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Francis Charles Mendenhall. Her brother, John Wesley Hege of Arcadia, also preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughter and caregiver Susan Smith and her husband Terry of Weddington, NC and his five children and two grandchildren; a son Charles Wesley Mendenhall and his wife Diana of Gastonia, NC and their two children, Ashley and Bradley. She is also survived by her dear sister, Eva Mae (Tommie) Stewart and husband Clifton of High Point, N.C.; her sister-in-law Alma Kathryn Hege of Arcadia and many loving nieces and nephews. Earsley loved to travel and to spend time with her family and church friends. She was a member of Friedberg Moravian Church. She participated in many activates of the church, including pianist for Sunday School and Bible School, Sunday School teacher and member of the Senior Friends and Senior Friends Chorus. She loved God and her church family. She was always eager to help with church projects and events. She will be remembered for her kind spirit and service to others. She was loved by many and will be missed by everyone who knew her. A funeral service will be conducted 2:00 pm Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at Friedberg Moravian Church with the Rev. G. Thomas Shelton and Rev. Norwood Green officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends Monday from 6-9 pm at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family would like to give a heartfelt thanks to our friends, relatives and church family of Friedberg Moravian Church for all their love, prayers, visits, phone calls, cards and words of encouragement during the time of her declining health. We would like to express special appreciation to the staff of Community Home Care and Hospice of Monroe, NC who cared for her during her final days.
