Mr. Dwain Gilbert Tracy, 86, formerly of Charisma Lane Lewisville died Saturday, September 27, 2008 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Tracy was born November 22, 1921 in Casey, Iowa, son of the late James Garfield Tracy and the late Eva Marie Knox Tracy. He was a US Army veteran serving during WW II. Mr. Tracy came to Winston-Salem in 1947 to play professional baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals AAA farm team as a left handed pitcher. While here that summer, he met the love of his life Frances Hawkins at a local bus stop. After a summer romance and corresponding by mail, she rode the train to Iowa where they were married on February 9, 1948. The were happily married for 58 years until her death in October 2006. Mr. Tracy was the owner and operator of Tracy's Exxon Service Station. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Donald Tracy and Leonard Tracy. Mr. Tracy is survived by his brother, Dale Tracy, nieces and nephews, Patty Lorenz and husband Tom, Louise Trofholz and husband Dana, Jim Tracy and wife Lori, LeAnn Lang and husband Jeff, Paul Hawkins and wife Peggy, Janie Joyce and husband Wray, ""Sonny"" Hawkins and wife Ellen, and Kelly Hawkins. A graveside service will be conducted 2:00 PM Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at Forsyth Memorial Park with Rev. Chris Byrne officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care 101 Hospice Lane Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family would like to thank the staff at Mallard Ridge Assisted Living for their kind care and support.
