Dr. Kenan Banks Williams, for many years a well-loved pediatrician in Winston-Salem, passed away May 27, 2009. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church. Born on March 11, 1920 in Sanford, NC, to Warren R. and Ellen Makepeace Williams, Dr. Williams attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill for college and medical school. He finished his medical education at Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia. He also trained in Rochester, NY and at Bowman Gray/Baptist Hospital and served as an Army doctor during World War II. A life-time member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a supporter of Brenner Children's Hospital, he was a practicing pediatrician for thirty eight years. He and his good friend Dr. Russell Perry founded Pediatric Associates in Winston-Salem. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Klein Williams; his brothers, Warren R. Williams, Jr. and Robert P. Williams and his sister, Mildred Leonard. While attending his fiftieth high school reunion in Sanford, he met Elizabeth Teague Sloan whose father had practiced law with Kenan's father. In 1988, after retiring, he married Elizabeth and moved to Sanford. An avid golfer and long-time member of Old Town Club in Winston-Salem, he enjoyed playing golf several times a week in Sanford. He was also active in the Sanford Lion's Club, the Methodist Men's Prayer Breakfast, and the ""Fish Club."" Dr. Williams is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Teague Williams; two sons and their wives; Craig R. and Martha N. Williams of Spartanburg, SC, and James K. and Emmy Knott Williams of Winston-Salem; two granddaughters, Lisa N. Williams of Columbia, SC and Melody J. Williams of New Orleans, LA; and his brother, Edward M.""Bucky"" Williams of Southern Pines, NC. Through extended family, he had five step sons, Temple Sloan of Raleigh, Ham Sloan of Morehead City, David Wood of Rockingham, Tom Wood of Pinehurst and Lawrence Wood of Southern Pines; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family will be receiving friends on Thursday, May 28th at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway from 6 to 8 PM. There will be a memorial service at St. John's Lutheran Church in Winston-Salem at 10:00 AM on Friday, May 29, 2009 with a visitation following in the church. There will also be a memorial service in Sanford, NC at 3:30 PM on Friday, May 29, 2009 with visitation following at First Presbyterian Church of Sanford, NC. Burial will be a private service at Buffalo Cemetery in Sanford.
