Dr. Thoppe V. R. Subramanian, 73, of Clemmons, NC, passed away on April 14, 2014, with family and close friends by his side. Over the years, he touched many people with his helpful advice and generous nature. A social butterfly, T.V.R./Subbu/Subie was the life of the party and always made an effort to keep in touch with friends he had made from childhood to the present. Despite living with chronic pain, he never let that stop him from completing his long list of goals. He had an incredible love for his wife and children that gave him the strength to provide a wonderful life for them. With a smile on his face and a lively spirit, he enjoyed traveling all over the world and taking pictures at every turn. Subbu relished trying new foods, as long as they were spicy enough to make his eyes water and his forehead sweat. A brutally honest food critic, he was also a backseat chef and mango expert. He enjoyed shopping and the thrill of a great bargain. One thing is for sure.. he was a passionate individual and an inspiration to everyone who knew him, and his traits live on in his children. Subbu was born in Madurai, India and graduated from Thanjavur Medical College in 1966 before immigrating to England in 1972. He worked in England as a general practitioner for eight years, then moved to Winston-Salem, NC in 1980, where he worked for 33 years as a psychiatrist for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salisbury, NC and a number of other smaller clinics. Affectionately known as Dr. Subie, he truly enjoyed interacting with his patients and coworkers and making a difference. Subbu is lovingly remembered by his wife of 46 years, Usha Subramanian; children Krithiga and Arun; son-in-law Subhas; future daughter-in-law Mary; grandchildren Surina and Arjun; and sisters Lalitha and Saroja. Subbu will be missed dearly as a loving husband, father and friend. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 17, 2014 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorial donations may be made on his behalf to the ANRF (Arthritis National Research Foundation) to benefit rheumatoid arthritis research. Please visit www.curearthritis.org/honorary-gifts.
