Dr. Fred J. Smith

Dr. Fred J. Smith, 80, went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 20, 2017. Dr. Smith was born January 17, 1937 in Morganton, NC to the late John and Alice Smith. He practiced general dentistry in Winston-Salem for 44 years. Dr. Smith graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.A. and his D.D.S. Following school, he served in the U.S. Army as a dentist at the rank of captain in France. Following service, he practiced dentistry in his hometown of Morganton for two years. He was a member of the American Dental Association, Forsyth County Dental Society, N.C. State Dental Society, and the American Academy of General Dentistry. He served as president of the N.C. Academy of General Dentistry in 1995. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He served as a deacon at Calvary and in many other ways. He served the community as a volunteer in several local dental clinics and organized the Living Waters Dental Clinic. He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Shirley Stevens Smith, and four children: Dr. Jon Smith, April Smith Tilley, Tiffany Smith Moore, and Tyler Fred Smith. He is survived by nine grandchildren: Sibylle Smith, Jon-Mark Smith, Bethany Smith Rodriguez, Rebecca Moore, Austin Moore, Rachel Tilley, Spencer Tilley, Corinne Smith, and Andy Smith. He is also survived by two sisters: Leila Smith Chapman and Irene Smith Howard. He loved the Lord our God, his family, and dentistry. Special thanks to Liberty Hospice for their excellent care and also to Lewis and Ramona Stevens and Carl Stevens. Services will be held at Calvary Baptist Church at 1 pm on Thursday, March 23, 2017 with Dr. Gary Chapman and Dr. Jon Smith officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 from 6-8 pm at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
