Dr. John Phillips, 83 of Winston-Salem, NC went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 25, 2010 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Dr. Phillips was born February 11, 1927 in Newport, South Wales, in the UK to the late Leonard and Ruth Louisa Anstice Phillips. John Phillips has been teaching and writing about the Bible for a lifetime. Dr. Phillips served in the British Army in Palestine during the closing years of the British Mandate, and witnessed the events which led up to the rebirth of the State of Israel. He moved to Canada after World War II, where he worked for a British Bank, married and in time founded a small church. Later, he joined the staff of Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL, where he served as Assistant Director of their Correspondence School. He also taught in the Evening Extension School and spoke regularly over the Moody Radio Network. In addition, he served as Director of the Emmaus Correspondence School, at the time, the largest school of its kind in the world. Dr. Phillips held a Doctor of Ministry Degree D.Min from Luther Rice Seminary. He is best known for authorship of over fifty books about the bible, including a complete set of New Testament Commentariesâ¦the Exploring the Bible Series, and his Introducing People of the Bible Series. His books continue to be the best sellers among Bible teachers in America and around the world. In addition to his parents, Dr. Phillips was preceded in death by his first wife; Jean Phillips and a sister, Grace Phillips. Surviving to cherish his memory, are his wife; Betty Jean Ferrell Phillips of the home; four children; Joanne Christensen, Marilyn Lobough, Audrey Jose, John Phillips; four step children; Debbie Wilson, Dianna Lightfoot, James L. Lightfoot, Donna Watling; 12 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Dr. James Phillips of Toronto, Canada and a sister, Millicent Dowen of Cardiff, South Wales. The Funeral Service will be conducted 2:30 pm Thursday, July 29 at the Gospel Light Baptist Church officiated by Dr. Bobby Roberson, Dr. John Reynolds and Dr. Roger Willmore. A Graveside Service will be conducted 11:00 am Friday, July 30 in the Montlawn Memorial Park, Raleigh, NC.
