Dr. Paul Douglas Nifong

Dr. Paul Douglas Nifong, of Clemmons passed away Thursday, May 5th 2016. He was born Oct 7, 1925 in Davidson County, to Henry Cleveland and Pearl Miller Nifong. He was the 7th of 9 children. He spent the early years of his life cultivating the soil, and helping his brother Henry build a dairy herd. Dr. Nifong graduated from Arcadia High School, UNC- Chapel Hill, and UNC Dental School. Between his under graduate degree and Dental degree; he served 5 years in the US Air Force during the Korean War; of which one year was in Korea. He was a pilot who loved to fly, making daily flights from Tokyo to Korea. He was in a reserve 464th Tactical Unit, flying C-46's carrying mail, cargo, soldiers on R and R, evacuating dead and wounded back to Tokyo. He was transferred to C-119's and trained with the 82nd Airborne at Ft. Bragg. After returning from the Air Force he was accepted to UNC Chapel Hill School of Dentistry, graduating in 1959. In 1960 he returned to Clemmons where he and his brother, Frank M. Nifong, MD opened their private practice. They served the community together for 19 years. In 1978, he and his son, Paul D. Nifong, Jr. built a new office beside the old one and practiced dentistry together for 28 years. He retired after 47 years at the age of 81. He also was President of the Forsyth County Dental Society in 1982. Paul was a member of Clemmons Moravian Church where he served as Superintendent of Sunday School in the early 60's. He taught junior and senior high classes, he served on two building committees, one for the Sanctuary, and one for the Fellowship Hall. He was church Treasurer for 39 years. He painted the outside of the church in 1962-63, and replaced all broken windowpanes. He played in the band for many years. He said many times that he was fortunate to have Bishop Burton Rights as his gentle mentor for 36 years while at Clemmons. He served on the Board of World Mission of the Moravian Church for 12 years, 6 of those years he was Vice-Chair of the Mission Board. He also served on the Mission Society of the Moravian Church, South. He was responsible for setting up a Dental Clinic in Ahuas, Honduras, where natives would walk from miles around to seek relief from dental pain. He also loved to support Samaritan Ministries, Crisis Control and Sunnyside Ministry. He leaves behind his loving wife of 64 years, Marie, and 2 children, Dr. Paul Nifong, Jr. and wife Melissa, Gary Nifong and wife Margaret, 1 deceased child, Lisa Nifong Curry; also 5 grandchildren, Alex Nifong, Patrick Nifong, Nathaniel Nifong, Ashley Nifong, and Molly Nifong, and 1 surviving sister, Vearl Johnson of Garner, NC. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, May 9, 2016 at Clemmons Moravian Church with Rev. Ray Burke officiating. Interment will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM, Sunday, May 8, 2016 at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel. Memorials may be made to Clemmons Moravian Church Building Fund.
