Dr. Charles Robert Helsabeck, Jr.

On June 6, 2013, Dr. Charles Robert Helsabeck, Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died after a period declining health. Dr. Robert was born on September 16, 1916 in Rural Hall, NC. He was the son of Charles Robert Helsabeck, Sr. and Ruth Payne Helsabeck. After graduating from Rural Hall School and High School, he studied for two years at Atlantic Christian College and then one year at UNC-Chapel Hill. He studied dentistry at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. Dr. Robert then started a dental practice in Rural Hall in 1940 and served the dental needs of a large area between Winston Salem and Mount Airy. He dedicated himself to providing quality care to the community. He was joined by his son, Dr. James Robert Helsabeck in 1972. He was active in various dental organizations and was devoted to his profession. Dr. Robert loved the town of Rural Hall where he lived his entire life. He was a faithful member of Rural Hall Church of Christ where he served as an elder and member of various committees, including the building committee which organized the building of the sanctuary in the 1950's. He was also a member of the Rural Hall Civic Club which was organized to help support local charities and civic organizations, including a very active Boy Scout Troop 914. Dr. Robert was a member of the Masonic Lodge #629 and a board member of the Commercial and Farmers Bank, subsequently First Citizens Bank. Dr. Robert loved entertaining friends and family and tinkering around at his mountain cabin in Fancy Gap, Virginia. He was always kind, generous and loved being with family and friends. He was predeceased by sisters Elizabeth Alley, Dorothy Ridenhour and Aline Helsabeck. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Ruth Haigler Helsabeck and children James Robert Helsabeck (wife, Linda), Charles Hassel Helsabeck (wife, Caroline), Eric Haigler Helsabeck (wife, Judy), and Annette Ruth Helsabeck. He is also survived by grandchildren Nathan, Spencer, Amanda, Julie, Keith and Graham and great grandchildren Lilly Kate and Fischer. He was well loved by family and friends. A celebration of life will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 9, 2013 at Rural Hall Church of Christ with Peter Cain, Minister officiating. A private graveside service will follow the service at the church. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 Saturday evening at Hayworth-Miller Funeral home in Rural Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Rural Hall Church of Christ, 280 Bethania-Rural Hall Rd., Rural Hall, NC 27045.
