Dr. G. Carl Green

After a period of declining health, Dr. G. Carl Green passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 14, 2010. During his last days, four generations of G. Carl's family gathered with him to celebrate his long life and to remember his devotion to us all. He was a man of deep and abiding faith, and while the end of his earthly life is a heartbreaking loss for us, it surely signifies a victory for him. G. Carl was born in Decatur, AL on July 1, 1918, the only child of Roy and Bethona Clark Green. On July 7, 1942, he and Martha-Grace Sarber married, and their union lasted more than 68 years. The couple had two sons, Stephen and Stanley. From the moment G. Carl was called to the ministry in 1939, preaching and teaching the Gospel became his life's work. For more than sixty years, Dr. Green served as pastor in churches throughout Alabama (Friendship Baptist, New Hope Baptist, Lebanon Baptist, First Baptist, Eclectic Baptist, and Goodhope Baptist), Georgia (Pennville Baptist, Mikado Baptist), South Carolina (Southside Baptist), and North Carolina (Faith Baptist Church, 1981-2000). Along the way, he received his B.A. from Samford University in Birmingham, AL and his Master's Degree from Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC; he was also awarded a Doctor of Divinity Degree from Bob Jones University and a Doctor of Laws Degree from Tennessee Temple College. Dr. Green was a professor of Greek and Bible at Tennessee Temple College, and later at Piedmont [Baptist] Bible College in Winston-Salem. His son Stan's 1968 death in Vietnam was the most devastating test and ultimately the greatest triumph of Dr. Green's faith; he emerged from the tragedy more certain of God's goodness and grace, and his ministry was made stronger with that conviction. Though he studied and spoke often of matters spiritual, G. Carl was a man who enjoyed his time on this earth. He delighted friends and congregants with humorous stories of his simple childhood and lessons learned along the way. He had common sense and a belief in the value and pleasure of hard work; he could bush-hog a field, tend a garden, fix a fence, paint a house, tinker with a truck, bulldoze a stump, train a bird-dog and rub-down a horse. In all things, he was forgiving, generous, dependable, and kind. G. Carl considered the closeness of his family to be his greatest blessing and achievement; his dedication to his wife, sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren endured until his last breath. Dr. Green was predeceased by his parents, Roy and Bethona, and by his younger son, Stanley Norris Green. He is survived by his devoted wife, Martha-Grace Sarber Green; his son, Stephen Clark Green; his grandchildren and their spouses: Stan and Jennifer Green, Sunny and Joel Cordray, and Shea and Chuck Jones; his great-grandchildren: Stan, Jack, David, and Alexander Green; John, Eliza, and Nicholas Cordray; and Charlie, Reece, and Cooper Jones. A funeral service will be at 3:00 PM Sunday October 17, 2010 at Calvary Baptist Church with Dr. Gary Chapman and Stephen Green officiating.
