Dr. Walter John Bo, 86, of Winston-Salem, passed away Saturday, March 21st, 2009. He was born August 12th, 1922, in Chisholm, MN to Bene and Rose Boetto Bo. Dr. Bo graduated from the doctoral program at the University of Cincinnati in 1953 after receiving his bachelor's and master's degrees from Marquette University. Upon graduation from Cincinnati he began his teaching career at the University of North Dakota-Grand Forks and in 1960 he joined the faculty at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine where he remained as a full time professor for 47 years. Thousands of students passed through his gross anatomy lab, which formed a cornerstone of the curriculum at the Medical School. Having a profound impact on these young men and women, Dr. Bo's influence on the medical field has been felt worldwide. Known for his rigorous rounds of questioning that his students dubbed ""Gestapo sessions,"" Dr Bo's reputation for tough and fair teaching formed a major part of his legacy. In 1980, he collaborated on the medical reference book The Basic Atlas of Sectional Anatomy, which continued publication through a fourth edition. In addition to publication, Dr. Bo's quality teaching was recognized by the Alpha Omega Alpha Robert J. Glaster Distinguished Teaching Award in 2001, as well as numerous teaching excellent awards and distinguished faculty awards from the medical school. Dr. Bo, and his wife of 60 years Jeanice, were also active in St. Leo the Great Catholic Church and Bishop McGuinness High School, including time as Athletic Director for the high school and serving on the Parish Council. As a member of the Knights of Columbus, Dr. Bo attained the rank of 4th Degree Grand Knight, and played an active role in the Knights' many service projects. Dr. Bo's greatest pride, however, was his family. He is survived by his wife, Jeanice; three daughters, Karen (Rick) Eklund, Kathy (Philip) Lane, and Mary (Jeff) Chavis; one sister, Therese Zanardi of Chisholm, MN; and six grandchildren, Christopher, Megan, Jennifer Eklund, Stephanie Lane, and Brian and Lauren Chavis.
