Mr. Douglas ""Doug"" Curwood Martin, 62, of Winston-Salem passed away on Thursday, November 12, 2009. Born in Forsyth County on November 7, 1947, Doug spent most of his life in the Winston-Salem area. Following his graduation from high school, Doug joined the United States Air Force, serving in Vietnam and earning the rank of Sargent. Following his military service, he began working at UPS, where he had a 30-year career. Upon his retirement from UPS, he purchased the UPS Store in Kernersville and managed the daily operations there. As a member of Woodland Baptist Church, Doug played the bass guitar for the church choir and was an active member of the Ambassadors Sunday School class. He will be remembered for his devotion to his church and family, in addition to his love of fishing and photography. Doug is preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Oldham Martin. He is survived by his wife of eight years, Judy Burchette Martin, as well as stepson and his wife, Samuel Jason Stone and Sarah Lee Stone. Doug also leaves behind his father-in-law and mother-in-law, James E. and Dorothy Burchette of Elkin; the following bothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Benny and Patsy Stone, Tommy and Tommie Carol Burchette, Gary and Karen Burchette, and Ronald and Becky Burchette; as well as his special friends, the family of James and Reva Hartness. Doug's family will receive friends on Saturday, November 14, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Woodland Baptist Church, 1175 Bethania Rural Hall Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. The funeral also will be held at Woodland Baptist Church and will take place on Monday, November 16, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Tim Gammons officiating. A military graveside service officated by Don Walker will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Woodland Baptist Church Building Fund.
