Mr. Douglas Millard Kauffman, peacefully went home to be with the Lord at 7:45 am on Sunday, June 29, 2014 at Bermuda Commons Nursing and Rehab in Advance. He was born in Shippensburg, PA on October 19, 1926 to his loving parents; Millard and Pearl Kauffman of Fayetteville, PA. Douglas graduated from Chambersburg High School and served in the U.S. Air Force as a major before completing his engineering degree with an emphasis on math and physics at Gettysburg College, Pennsylvania in 1951. Mr. Kauffman ""wore many hats"" during his career as an aeronautical engineer with Fairchild Engine and Airplane Corporation (Hagerstown, MD 1953-1977), Cessna Aircraft Company (Wichita, KS 1978-1986) and BE Aerospace (Winston-Salem, NC 1987-1999). Douglas received his pilot's license while at Cessna in 1978. His extensive knowledge of math and physics resulted in his development of the equation for flutter analysis which was applied to the St. Louis Arch design and aircraft design in general. After his ""retirement"" in 1999 Douglas offered his expertise as a consultant for various companies from 2000 to 2003. Mr. Kauffman was fortunate to experience extensive travel throughout Europe, Russia and China along with whitewater rafting in Idaho, although his favorite trips were to the Kauffman Family Reunion which was held every July in Caledonia State Park near his hometown of Fayetteville, PA. As an active member of Augsburg Lutheran Church in Winston-Salem, NC, Douglas attributed the good health he had for most of his life to his love of God, family and an avid affection towards running and golf. Douglas Millard Kauffman is survived by a large family including his devoted wife, Joyce M. Kauffman; big brother, Glen; his three beloved children, Suzy, Stephanie and Steve along with many beautiful grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any greatly appreciated gifts to be given in the form of a donation, to Augsburg Lutheran Church, 845 W 5th St, Winston Salem, NC 27101. Life celebration service arrangements are being planned through Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home (Kinderton Chapel) and Augsburg Lutheran Church. Thank you for your love and prayers! Revelation 22:5
