Dorothy Lee Pegram Spaugh

Dorothy Lee Pegram Spaugh, 84, of Winston-Salem passed away Monday evening, November 15, 2010 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She had been in declining health for the past several years. She was born to the late Alma D. and R. Alvin Pegram on November 25, 1925. Dorothy graduated from Mineral Springs High School in 1942. She married Charles Lee Spaugh, an Air Force Sergeant in WWII, October 23, 1943. That same year, she began her career with Southern Bell Telephone Company, where she was employed for over 35 years. Dot was a lifelong member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church where for many years she oversaw the church Sunday School nursery. She was always certain of her faith in Christ and practiced Christian principles throughout her life as a wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend. She was a seamstress who, in addition to sewing for her daughters in their early years, also created gowns for their wedding parties and for local brides. She enjoyed bowling until she was well over 75 years old. In 2004 Dorothy began a steady decline with a diagnosis of dementia. She was a former resident of Brighton Gardens Assisted Living and the memory care unit at The Elms in Clemmons. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles in 1986; her parents; and a brother, Robert Pegram. Surviving are her daughters, Bonnie White (Tom) of Winston-Salem, Sandra Forkner (Tom) of Franklin; her sons, Michael Spaugh (Sandy) of Winston-Salem and William Spaugh (Deborah) of Ft. Mill, SC; grandchildren, Meredith Spaugh of Charlotte, Elizabeth White of Greensboro, Whitney S. Kirby (Nick) of Belton, SC, David Forkner (Bonnie) of Colorado Springs, CO, and Allison Forkner of Boone; a step-granddaughter, Emily Midea (Danny) of Hickory; step-grandson, Andy White (Alice Crowder) of Easley, SC; four step great-grandchildren, Madison and Samantha Midea and Lily and Noah Crowder-White; two brothers, James Pegram (Delphine) of Rural Hall and Jack Ridings (Diane) of Lewisville; and several nieces and nephews. For many years she enjoyed the company of a special friend, Ralph Doss. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, November 18 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. A Service of Remembrance will be held at Mineral Springs Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 19 with Dr. Gus Thomas and Dr. Cecil Cave officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. Mrs. Spaugh will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
