Dorothy Myers Hastings

Mrs. Dorothy Jean Myers Hastings, of Walkertown, passed away on July 7, 2012 at the age of 84, after facing the last six years of health struggles with amazing courage and strength. ""Dot"" was born on April 19, 1928 in Forsyth County to the late Harvey Wilson and Jeannette Ebert Myers. She was a graduate of Griffith High School. Dot met the love of her life, Harvey Hastings, at a basketball game in the Hanes gym. They were married for 65 years. She could often be found delivering meals, making chicken pies, and visiting friends in nursing homes, as a member of Love's United Methodist Church for 65 years. Dot was a great cook, seamstress, and gardener. Her children and grandchildren especially liked her fried chicken, vegetable soup, sweet potato casserole, mashed potatoes, and gravy biscuits. Dot was great with names, dates, and details and was always the go to person for any information the family needed. Even while in the hospital, she wanted her family to check the scores of Atlanta Braves baseball. She avidly followed Duke and Carolina basketball, much to the chagrin of the NC State fans in the family. Dot loved to travel with Harvey and they visited 49 states and 7 countries. But her greatest delight came from her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was a perfect Mama, Grandma, and Mamaw. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Harvey Wilson Myers, Jr. and Frank Ebert Myers; and by a sister, Addie Myers Jarvis. Surviving are her husband, Harvey Lee Hastings, of the home; a daughter, Carol Holleman (Steve) of Kernersville; a son, Michael L. Hastings (Linda) of Winston-Salem; 3 grandchildren, Jennifer Holleman Allen (Jeff), Jeffrey Holleman (Audra), and Julie Holleman Tate (Michael); 5 great grandchildren, Matthew Allen, Henry Holleman, Anna Leigh Holleman, Kaitlyn Tate, and Emily Tate. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday at Love's United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9:30-11:00 a.m. prior to the service in the church parlor. Memorials may be made to Love's United Methodist Church, 3020 Main St, Walkertown, N.C. 27051 or to Senior Services, 2895 Shorefair Dr, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27105. The family would like to express their thanks to Cinammon Douglas, Gretchen Fink, Autumn Ore, Karen Taylor, and Angel Wilson for their loving care of Dot.
