Doris Curley Rodgman

Doris Curley Rodgman passed away peacefully on March 3, 2015. She was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on September 11, 1923 to Raymond Clement and Eleanor Freel Curley. She attended grades 1 through 8 at St. Vincent de Paul Grammar School and Grades 9 through 13 at St. Joseph's Convent School, graduating in 1942. During the summer of 1940 she met her husband-to-be, Alan. They fell in love on their first date. During Alan's three-year service in the Royal Canadian Navy during World World II, Doris and Alan wrote daily letters to each other. They married in June of 1947 at St. John's Chapel of St. Michael's Cathedral in Toronto and were happily married for nearly 67 years until Alan passed away in December 2013. Doris was employed in the Personnel Department of the Toronto office of the Bell Telephone Company of Canada from 1942 to 1948. Thereafter, Doris dedicated her life to being a devoted wife to Alan and a loving and nurturing mother to their three sons, Eric, Paul, and Mark, all born in Toronto. In 1954 the family moved to Winston-Salem. Doris was a very active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. For many years Doris worked in the nursery of the church. For more than 20 years she delivered Meals-on-Wheels. She assisted at meal times at the Samaritan House and drove patrons of the Downtown Church Center until its termination. She was tirelessly committed to the W-S National Little League both as President of the Ladies Auxiliary and watching her sons play ball. A great passion of hers was her daily walks with Alan and their family pets in the local parks as well as walking in the surf on numerous vacations they spent at Myrtle Beach. She took great joy in feeding and watching the birds and squirrels from her beloved screened-porch. Doris was an avid and skilled bridge player, enjoying playing with her two Bridge Clubs and playing summer evenings with her boys and their friends on the screened-porch. Her greatest pleasure was having her family together. A memory we will always share from our family gatherings is her standing on the front porch waving and blowing kisses good-bye. Doris treasured any opportunity to have her three sons all to herself, as most mothers can relate. Indeed her final visit with her three sons together she blew each of them a kiss. She was predeceased by her mother Eleanor in 1949, her father Raymond in 1980, her brother Russell in 2005, her husband Alan in 2013, her granddaughter Christine Marie Rodgman in 1983 and grandson Colin Richard Rodgman in 1991. Doris is survived by her three sons and their wives: Eric and Melody of Durham, Paul and Ella of Raleigh, Mark and Sara of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren: Melissa Rodgman Sholtz (Jason) of Durham, Kevin Rodgman of Durham, Mary Kathryn Rodgman of Wilmington, Jason Rodgman (Meridith) of Raleigh, Laura Kelly Lancaster (Justin ) of Cary, Scott Rodgman (Lindsey Grace) of Greensboro, and Samuel Rodgman of Chapel Hill; four great grandchildren: great grandsons, Ryan Lancaster of Cary, Colin Sholtz of Durham, Grey Rodgman of Greensboro and great granddaughter Marin Sholtz of Durham. A funeral will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 520 Summit Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101 on Saturday, March 14 at 2:00 p.m. with interment to follow at St. Paul's Dalton Garden. The family will receive friends and family immediately following the service in the Colhoun Room at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
