Mrs. Doris Ann Bowlen Nelson, 73, passed away at her home on Saturday, March 27, 2021. She was born in Stokes Co. on November 12, 1947 the daughter of the late Raleigh Bowlen and Winona Bullins Bowlen. Mrs. Nelson was a member of Freedom Baptist Church and graduated from East Surry High School in 1965. As a pet sitter, she loved animals and had a passion for caring for them. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend who will be missed deeply by all who knew her. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, David Oscar Bowlen; and a grandson, Cody Hurley. She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Barry L. Nelson; a daughter, Sherry Lynn Coleman Hurley; two grandsons, Dustin Hurley (Haley) and Thomas McCreary; two great-grandchildren, Riley and Olivia; one brother, Darrell Bowlen; an uncle, Edward Bullins (Myra); a cousin, Margaret Wilmoth; and numerous other living relatives and dear friends. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 pm Thursday, April 1, 2021 at Freedom Baptist Church with Pastor Jon White and Rev. Danny Poindexter officiating, Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:45-1:45 prior to the service at Freedom Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
