Doris Hall Joyce

Doris Hall Joyce, 88, of Winston-Salem, passed away on January 4, 2016, after several years of declining health. Doris was born on February 13, 1927, in Mayodan, NC, to Hardin Cecil Hall and Quincy Cardwell Hall.
Doris was predeceased by her beloved husband, Harvey James Joyce, two brothers - Jack and Joe Hall - and a sister, Mae Hall Wray. She is survived by a son, Keith Hall Joyce (Leigh Ann), a granddaughter, Katherine Hall (Katie) Joyce, whom she always described as ""the apple of her eye,"" and a sister, Corinne Hall Rumley (Paul).
Later in life she gained three ""bonus"" grandchildren - Jeremy Wayne Smith (Kimberly), Morgan Tanner Smith (Courtney), Lauren Brooke Smith, and a great-grandson, Mason Hunter Smith. Doris was also close to Katie's mother, Joan O. Joyce.
Doris was an all-conference basketball player in high school and enjoyed watching basketball her entire life. She married Harvey, her childhood sweetheart, in 1946 and moved to California where he served in the Navy until 1949. She learned to be independent when Harvey was deployed and she fiercely maintained this trait for the rest of her life. Doris was devoted to her family and friends. She loved working in her yard and enjoyed her Sunday school class and Circle at Beck's Baptist Church.
In 1967 Doris went to work in the daycare at Beck's Baptist and continued for over 35 years. Doris loved the hundreds of children who were in her care over the years and was deeply saddened when she had to retire.
The family is grateful for the concern and prayers for Mom during her illness and passing. We take comfort in our belief that ""Granny"" has gone home to her Heavenly Father; we know that in God's time we will see her again.
A memorial service will held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, January 7 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family will receive friends from 12:30 pm until the service begins. A brief graveside service will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Grandfather Home for Children or the Hospice and Palliative Care Center.
