Doris Jane Smith Conrad

Doris Jane Smith Conrad, 93, took her place in heaven April 19, 2023, after an extended illness.

She was born May 10, 1929, in Wheatley, Kentucky to the late William and Hattie Smith.  Once the family moved to Winston Salem, she graduated from Reynolds High School and she continued her education at UNCG, earning a degree in Home Economics. Doris was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.  She raised her family at New Philadelphia Moravian Church and returned to her Baptist roots at Calvary Baptist Church for a period of time. As an active and faithful church member, she relished any opportunity to teach young children in Sunday School or to minister to senior citizens. Doris was known by many to be a great organizer of family or church luncheons and dinners. She loved building shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child and sewing teddy bears for children in need. She was loved by many and will be dearly missed.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Lucas J. Conrad and her sister, Carolyn Whicker.  Doris is survived by a daughter and two sons, Donna Hollowell (Bob), Barry Conrad, and Keith Conrad (Debbie); one brother, Bill Smith (Betsy); five grandchildren, Robert Hollowell, Lauren Loeffler, Lucas Conrad, Elaine Conrad, and Thomas Conrad; and four great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at New Philadelphia Moravian Church with The Rt. Rev. Sam Gray officiating.  A private graveside service was held on a previous date at New Philadelphia Moravian Graveyard.

The family extends their sincere appreciation to Tina, Kim, Artiga, and all the dedicated Trellis Hospice caregivers, for their love and compassion shown during her time of illness.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made in Doris’s memory to New Philadelphia Moravian Church, 4440 Country Club Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27104, or Sunnyside Ministry, 319 Haled St., Winston-Salem, NC 27127.
