Doris Thaxton Athan

Doris Myrtle Thaxton Athan, 91, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 8, 2014, at Homestead Hills Skilled Nursing Facility. She was born in Oglethorpe County, Georgia, on October 11, 1922, to the late Edward L. and Emmie M. Thaxton. Mrs. Athan was a 1944 graduate of the University Hospital School of Nurses in Augusta, Georgia, and was employed for most of her career as a registered nurse in the medical department of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company until her retirement in 1986. She traveled extensively with her husband to various places around the world, but she also enjoyed their many visits to Ocean Isle Beach, NC. Mrs. Athan was known throughout her life to be a lady having a sweet disposition. She was a faithful member of South Fork Church of Christ. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Athan was predeceased by her husband, John Wesley Athan, Jr., to whom she was devoted for 60 years; by a sister, Elizabeth T. Martin; by nieces, Nancy Wagoner and Robbie Sewell; and by a nephew, David Thaxton. Surviving her are a sister, Julia T. Cannon, of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Douglas L. Thaxton of Downers Grove, Illinois; niece Julia Gervais and husband, Cade; and nephews Glen Cannon and wife, Anne, and Trent Cannon and wife, Nancy; great-nieces Julia Cannon, Amy Cannon, Kate Cannon and Christina Patterson; and great-nephews Taylor Cannon, Jay Sewell and David Patterson. A funeral service for Mrs. Athan will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, September 12, 2014, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Mr. Charles Belch and Dr. William H. Allen officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour beginning at 1:30 p.m. Friday prior to the service.
