Nigerian Missionary, Doretta Annette Dail, born October 9, 1924, went home to be with Jesus Christ on April 20, 2010 at 7:25AM at Forsyth Medical Center. She was 85. Born in New York City, she grew up in New Jersey; she came to North Carolina in 1946 to attend Piedmont Bible College. By profession, Doretta was a photographer and assisted her father with printing/publishing at the New York Times. Her passion was to work with Jewish people in New York, however, the Lord called her to dedicate her life to be a full-time missionary to Nigeria, West Africa in 1948. She was a faithful student of God's word. Upon graduation in 1949, she went before the Sudan Interior Mission Council for mission approval in 1950. In 1951, Doretta began working in Nigeria as a ""BUSH"" missionary to the confluence between the Niger and Benue Rivers. In 1965, she founded Benue Evangelical Mission (B.E.M.) and was incorporated into the Federal Republic of Nigeria with registration done in Lagos. Through support of numerous churches, Doretta brought several Nigerians to the U.S. for Bible training. In the 1990's, B.E.M. built their church that would serve many villages. Heads of State (including the Governor) attended the dedication service. Doretta's autobiography, The Bush Path, that she was writing, will be completed and published by her beloved friends. She was a faithful attender of her many supporting churches, however, she considered Pleasant View Baptist Church her home church. She is preceded in death by her parents; one sister and two brothers. She is survived by nieces and nephews. Doretta made many wonderful and supporting friends over the years who brightened her life including Lorene Land of Reidsville, who serves as the Mission's Administrative Assistant. Doretta also had countless beloved spiritually adopted children and grandchildren, both in the U.S. and Nigeria, West Africa. A funeral service will be held 2:00PM Saturday, May 1, 2010 at Gospel Light Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Doretta's family of friends expresses their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Forsyth Medical Center that treated, supported and encouraged her while in their care.
