Mrs. Dora Elaine McSherry ""Dodie"" White, 74, of Little River, SC, died peacefully at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, NC on Tuesday, January 3, 2012. She was born on April 10, 1937 to the late George and Georgia McSherry in Hagerstown, Maryland. She graduated from Hagerstown High in 1955. She graduated from Catawba College in 1959, where she was honored with being Miss Catawba, and served as attendants to the court of Miss Catawba throughout her college education. Dodie married the late John Wesley White in 1959. A son, James Blair White was born in 1960, and a son, Michael Frederick White was born in 1962. She was a respected and beloved school teacher at Concord High School. She taught honors English, and was the advisor to the Weavings newspaper. She was also an active member of Business of Professional Women. She retired in 1997. Dodie was a lifelong Christian, and a Lutheran in her adult life. A member of King of Glory Lutheran Church in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where she served as a member of the Congregational Council. During her faith journey, she served as a Sunday Chuch School Teacher, Vacation Bible School Teacher, led various bible studies, and was active in congregational women's groups. Dodie was an avid reader, and to that end participated and led book club meetings regularly. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Wesley White in 2008; a sister, Virginia Hammond; a sister-in-law, Rosemary White and a brother-in-law, Glenn White. She is survived by her two sons, James White (Kelly) of Woodleaf, NC and Michael White (Danielle) of Welcome, NC; four grandsons, Joshua White (Amanda) of Midway, NC, David White (Heather) of Welcome, NC, Kevin White of Welcome, NC and John White of Welcome, NC; a granddaughter, Katie White of Mount Pleasant, NC; a great-granddaughter, Autumn of Welcome, NC; two sisters, Barbara Smith of Pennsylvania and Marlen Shafer of Hagerstown, Maryland; a brother-in-law, Charles (Pat) of Dalton, Nebraska, a brother-in-law, Fred White of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Nancy White of River Hills, South Carolina. A Memorial Service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 6, 2011 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Vicar Angela Jackson officiating. Interment will be at Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity Cemetery in Mount Pleasant at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to Hospice and Palliative Care of Forsyth County, 101 Hospice Ln., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
