Donald "Wayne" Mickey

Mr. Donald “Wayne” Mickey, 70, passed away Wednesday, July 13, 2022.  He was born December 20, 1951, in Surry County to the late Sidney Grider Mickey, Jr. and Opal Ayers Mickey.  Wayne was an avid sports fan, specifically golf, bowling, pulling for his UNC Tarheels basketball team, and coaching youth sports.  He was a loving father and “Pee-Paw”, who loved to always tell corny jokes.  He would also do anything for friends and family, putting their needs before his own.  Wayne retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 40 plus years of service.  Prior to that he delivered papers.  In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by four siblings: Mary, Ann, Bob, and Ron; nephew, Matt; and niece, Kay.  Wayne is survived by his two daughters, Ember (Colin) and Heather (Erich); four grandchildren: Tyler, Tristan, Skylar, and Colton; three step grandchildren: Tyler, Jordan, and E.J.; four siblings: Martha (Alvin), Ruby, Ellen (Terry), and David (Donna); and numerous nieces and nephews.  A funeral service will be conducted 2:00 PM Tuesday, July 19th at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Pastor Jason Holley officiating.  Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends Monday, July 18th from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Salvation Army Ken Carlson Boys & Girls Club, 2100 Reynolds Park Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27107.
