Donald Barry Wood passed away on July 8th 2012. He was born October 5, 1938 in Winston Salem to Leroy Wood and Wilma Reid Wood. He attended Wake Forest University and Winston Salem State University. He joined the Army and served from 1957-1967 in the reserves. Don served as the longest running president of the local American Postal Workers Union. He retired from the postal service after 40 years of service. Don was an avid runner and completed 49 marathons and numerous shorter events. He was famous in Winston for his long beard, which parted when he ran and resembled Yosemite Sam. His other passion was books, which he was constantly reading and collecting. The family often joked he could open his own book store. Don was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by Georgia Wood; two daughters Diane Upshaw and husband Oliver of Raleigh; Nancy Testa and husband Mark of Hong Kong, China; Sister Vilia Marshall and husband Robert of Winston Salem; long time friend Gerry Jones and nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 5:30 - 7:30, Tuesday, July 10th at Hayworth Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway. Services will be held at 2:00pm on Wednesday, July 11th at Hayworth Miller Silas Creek Chapel in Winston Salem.
