Mr. Donald Gray Whicker, 85, formerly of Kernersville, passed away peacefully, Thursday, March 5, 2015 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born October 7, 1929 in Forsyth County to Tenie Wood Whicker and William Luther Whicker. Mr. Whicker graduated from Mineral Springs High School and Draughons Business College. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1948-1952 during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Whicker retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in 1986 with 35 years of service. He grew up in Oak Grove Moravian Church and then became a member of Morris Chapel United Methodist Church in 1950. Donald faithfully served in many capacities over the years. He taught the Robert West Sunday School class for over 40 years and enjoyed the fellowship of the choir and mens chorus for as long as he was able to sing. He was a member of the American Legion, Walkertown Lions Club and a volunteer for Meals On Wheels. Of all his interests, which were many, his love was for the Lord, for his family and his friends. There could not have been a more selfless, kind, genuinely loving and compassionate man of great wisdom. He loved his family so well and missing him will only end in Heaven.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 56 years, Betty West Whicker and two sisters, Dorothy Turner and Grace Idol; eight brothers, Noah, Alfred, James, Johnny, Burton, Hillus, William and Charles Whicker. Surviving are three daughters, Sandra Mickler (Joe), Beverly Shepard (Mike) and Sarah Kiger (Rick), all of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren, Adam Tingen (Emily), Allison Grimes (Allen), Jessica MacDaniels (Nick), Weston Hafkey (Megan), Hannah Kiger, Trey Mickler (Melanie) and Paige Jenkins (Jonathan);nine great grandchildren, Caleb Tingen, Dylan Grimes, Lola Hafkey and Luna Hafkey, Kate and Hannah Mickler, Peyton, Luke and Sarah Jenkins.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 8, 2015 at Morris Chapel United Methodist Church in Walkertown with Pastor Dan Lyons and Rev. Steve Autrey officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel.
