Donald Worth Thompson, 82, of Greensboro, died Monday, April 29, 2013 at High Point Regional Hospital. He was born on September 20, 1930 in Salisbury, NC to the late Worth and Myrtle Thompson. Two brothers preceded him in death, Homer and Irving Thompson, as well as a sister-in-law, Helen Thompson. He is survived by a niece, Anne Thompson Jarrett and husband Dr. Thomas Jarrett of High Point; a nephew, Homer Maxwell (Mackie) Thompson, Jr. of Winston-Salem; grandnieces, Peyton Thompson, Pressley Thompson, Wendy Thompson Cheek and husband Robbie of Winston-Salem, their children, Maxwell and Leah Cheek; and grandnephew, Nick Thompson of Kernersville. Mr. Thompson spent most of his professional life working as a human resources manager for Flowers Bakery. He graduated from Catawba College in Salisbury, where he was a member of the tennis team. He also served as a Corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was an avid golfer who played well, with a record-making thirteen holes-in-one. He was a member of Maple Leaf Golf Course, where he enjoyed spending most days golfing with his many friends. He was an original PSL owner of the Carolina Panthers, and enjoyed attending games with various family members. Everyone who met Donald Thompson loved him. He was never without a smile on his face, a positive attitude, or a joke or two. He genuinely enjoyed each day. His infectious spirit made everyone feel better, reminding them to have fun and cherish life, and to not worry about the little things. He was fortunate to have wonderful neighbors surrounding him, who watched after him and always went the extra mile to be there for him, some say even spoiling him with their kindness. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, May 2 at Rowan Memorial Park in Salisbury with Pastor Bob McCaskill officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family would especially like to thank Dr. Zan Tyson and staff, who kept his heart ticking years longer than anyone could reasonably expect, and who never gave up on him. We would also like to thank Nancy Lester for her loving friendship and care, as well as the nurses in the Cardiac Care and step-down units at High Point Regional Hospital. Donald Thompson will be greatly missed, but never forgotten. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com.
