Mr. Donald Joe Southern, 72, passed away Saturday, December 19, 2015 at his home. He was born in Stokes County on April 27, 1943 to the late Charlie Wade and Ruby Overby Southern. Mr. Southern was a faithful member of Hanes Baptist Church who enjoyed watching sports, was an avid bowler, and loved his dog, ""Mindi."" Most importantly he was a loving husband, father, and Paw Paw. Surviving is his wife of 51 years, Vickie Southern of the home; two sons, Darren Southern of Lexington and Derek Southern and wife, Cynthia of Mooresville; two loving grandchildren, Mason and Emma; four sisters, Becky Carroll of Winston-Salem, Barbara Herman of Midway, Mary Davis and husband, Billy of Randleman, and Carolyn Sexton and husband, Charles of Welcome; also surviving are three brothers, Harold Southern and wife, Donna of Midway, Lloyd Southern and wife, Kathy of Midway, and Terry Southern and wife, Ann of Kernersville. A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at Hanes Baptist Church with Pastor Jason Holley officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends 6-8 PM Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hanes Baptist Church, 4210 Sabrina Lake Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27127 or to the Forsyth Humane Society, 61 Miller St., Winston-Salem, NC 27104.
