Mr. Donald Ray Smith Sr., 65, passed away Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born on October 27, 1943 in Forsyth County to the late David Jefferson Smith Jr. and Katherine Aleene Duggins Woodel. Mr. Smith retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company with over 35 years service and was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Rural Hall. He was a volunteer for Pop Warner Little Scholars Football League, served 10 years with Walkertown Wolfpack Football League and was executive secretary for Northwest Midget Pop Warner Football League for 21 years. In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a son, Paul Jeffrey Smith; and a grandson, Colten Jeffrey Smith. Surviving are his wife of 43 ½ years, JoAnn Jackson Smith of the home; one son, Donald Smith Jr. of Rural Hall; one daughter, Kimberly Bland (Patrick) of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Shane Merideth, Cierra and Dalton Smith, and Madison Bland; one brother, David ""Shorty"" Smith, III of King; and one sister, Barbara Woodel of Maryland. A funeral service will be conducted 3:00 P.M. Friday, January 2, 2009 at Faith United Methodist Church with the Rev. Evelyn M. Lemons officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. Thursday evening, January 1st at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. The family wishes to express a special thanks to Dr. Thomas Hinson, Dr. Susan Hines, Dr. Charles Stinson, the staff on the 9th floor palliative care unit at FMC and to the staff of Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.
