Donald Matthews

Donald Monroe Matthews, 75, passed away Friday, June 7, 2019 after a three-year battle with leukemia. He was born in Carroll County, VA on November 10, 1943 to the late Boyd Monroe and Ethel Cruise Matthews. Don was an active member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church. He loved spending time with his family, especially his wonderful grandchildren. Don was always ready to lend a helping hand, especially with any mechanical projects. He enjoyed drag racing, baseball, old cars, travelling, and napping in the sun. Don loved everyone he met and was loved by many. He spent over 40 years as a diesel mechanic. Preceding him in death were two sisters, Joyce Dalton and Faye Gardner. Surviving are his loving wife of 23 years, Sherry Matthews; three daughters, Valerie Woodard (Don) of Lewisville, Vilia “Jenny” Jenevieve McClearen (Mike) of Winston-Salem, and Terri Zappala-Morrow (James) of Philadelphia, PA; three sons, Todd Matthews (Sonia), of Winston-Salem, Miles Matthews of Winston-Salem, and Jacob Matthews-Zappala of Lewisville; six grandchildren, Jackson, Kaitlyn, Madelyn, Julianna, James, and Cooper; mother-in-law, Dorothy Wilson; two sisters, Brenda Hill of Fancy Gap, VA and Dawn McGrady of Mt. Airy, NC; also surviving are numerous extended family and friends. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, June 14, 2019 at New Philadelphia Moravian Church with Rev. Joe Moore officiating. The family will receive friends following the service with refreshments provided. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County, 1023 W. 14 St. Winston-Salem, NC 27105 or to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Donor Services PO Box 98018 Washington, D.C. 20090.  Hayworth-Miller Lewisville Chapel is serving the Matthews family.
