Mrs. Dixie Hammer Linville of Winston-Salem passed away peacefully at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center on Tuesday, June 17, 2014.
Mrs. Linville was born July 16, 1918 in Gibsonville, NC to Charles C. Hammer and Lottie R. Hammer. She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Roger A. Linville, in 1968; her second husband, Marshall O. Linville, in 1979; her brothers, Charles C. Hammer, Jr. and William D. Hammer; her sister, Rachel H. Lineberry; and her beloved great-grandson, Roger Aubrey Linville IV (AJ).
Mrs. Linville accepted Christ and joined First Baptist Church, Gibsonville, NC, in 1930. She graduated from Gibsonville High School as valedictorian in 1935 and Kings Business College in 1937. She had a long career as an accountant and bookkeeper for businesses in Burlington, Greensboro, and Winston-Salem. She was a loyal and faithful member of the First United Church of Christ since moving to Winston-Salem in 1948, serving as elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher, and president and treasurer of the Women's Guild. She received a Life Membership pin from the Women's Guild in 1958. Mrs. Linville served her community as leader of Cub Scout, Brownie Scout and Girl Scout troops and also served on the Girl Scout Council. She was president of the Waughtown School PTA for several years. She enjoyed volunteering with Meals on Wheels, Crisis Control, American Red Cross and Old Salem.
She is survived by a son, Roger A. (Chip) Linville, II, and wife, Dianne; a daughter, Dee Ann Robbs and husband, Larry; her six grandchildren, Holly (Al) Evans, Mary (Scott) Jones, Aubrey (Holli) Linville, Margaret Robbs, Austin Robbs, and Catherine (Keith) Farrow; eight great grandchildren, Stephanie and Drew Evans, Brevin, Leighton, Ethan, and Lydia Jones, and Grayson and Preston Linville; a sister in law, Margaret J. Stevens; dear friend, Wilda S. Robbs; and special caretakers, Anthanette Simmons, Virginia Miller, and Artrice Martin.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at 1pm at First United Church of Christ officiated by Rev. Wayne Linville, Rev. Nelson Weller, and Rev. David Crook. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service. A private graveside service will be held. Memorials may be made (in lieu of flowers) to The AJ Linville Fund at The Winston-Salem Foundation, 860 W. 5th Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101.
