Dillard W. Tisdale, age 89, passed away on March 6 at Trinity Elms Nursing Center following 2 years of declining health. Mr. Tisdale was born in Asheville, NC, the son of the late James W. Tisdale and Marion Harrison Tisdale. He graduated from Lee H. Edwards High School and attended the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, VA. Following his first year, he and many of his classmates left to enter military service. Mr. Tisdale served in the US 1st Infantry Division, 26th Infantry Regiment in Europe. After his tour of duty ended, he returned to Asheville and began working with First National Bank. He was recalled to active military duty in June 1950 reporting to Fort Hood, Texas, assigned to Headquarters Company Army Intelligence in the 3rd Army at Fort Benning, GA. Following release from inactive reserves in October 1951 he went to work for Wachovia Bank & Trust Co. in the Sales Finance Department in Charlotte, NC. Over the next ten years he became the Assistant Vice-President and Sales Representative for the department. During these years, he was a member of the United Way, the Finance Exchange Club, the Retail Credit Association and the Chamber of Commerce Membership Committee. On September 12, 1952, he married Rebecca Deal, beginning their life of 65 years together. After the merger of Wachovia Bank and First National Bank of Thomasville, NC, he was transferred in 1962 to Thomasville to organize a retail and automobile dealer sales finance program. In January 1964, he was transferred to Winston-Salem as Sales Manager for the old Time Payment department serving ten counties. He later became Vice- President and Regional Manager for the Northwest Region, serving twenty-seven years before retiring June 30, 1990. While in Winston-Salem, his civic duties included various fund raising campaigns for the United Way, YMCA, Arts Council and Old Salem Inc. He was a faithful member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church as long as his health permitted. Mr. Tisdale had a strong love of family and always helped them in any way he could. He was preceded in death by his brothers, James W. Tisdale, Jr., COL USAF (Ret), George M. Tisdale, Thomas Harrison Tisdale and a son, Robert Tisdale. He is survived by his wife Becky, son Ryland D. Tisdale, daughter Ellen Pfaff (Steve), grandson Garrett Pfaff and great-grandson Cole Pfaff and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Tisdale's fondest memories included playing golf and visiting and working with his many automobile dealer friends from the mountains to the coast. Throughout his adult life he remained a strong alumni supporter of his beloved Virginia Military Institute. The family would like to thank the staff of Trinity Elms Nursing & Rehabilitation Center for the compassionate and supportive care provided. Many of the staff became Mr. Tisdale's extended family during his two-year residency. Family visitation will be from 6:00 - 8:00 PM on Tuesday, March 13 at Hayworth Miller Funeral Home, 3315 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 14 at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 1730 Link Road, Winston-Salem, NC. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Trinity Elms Activity and Entertainment Fund, 7449 Fair Oaks Drive, Clemmons, NC 27012.
