David Bert Weeks, 88, of Winston-Salem passed away Monday, January 17. Bert leaves behind his wife of 62 years, Janice Little Weeks; his three children, David Allen Weeks ( Kimberly) of Wake Forest, NC, Mary Dell Weeks Ratliff ( Hank) of Fleetwood, NC, and Elizabeth Weeks Brown (Dean) of Denver, NC; two grandchildren, Katherine Craven Brown and Carson James David Brown; nephews, Bill Cummings and Butch Little and nieces, Diane Cummings Walsh, Kim Cummings Wertz, Cindy Little Ritchie and Kathy Goodman Simpkins and their families.
Bert was born October 17, 1933, in Clinton, NC to David Arthur Weeks and Della Honeycutt Weeks, who preceded him in death. His younger sister Grace Weeks Cummings and his brother-in-law R.E. Cummings also preceded him in death. Bert graduated from Clinton High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in recreation from North Carolina State University, where he played on the varsity baseball team.
After college, Bert served in the United States Army – retiring shortly after the end of the Korean War. He married Janice in 1959; the couple settled in Winston-Salem in the early 1960s.
Professionally, Bert served as Director of Recreation in Concord, NC and later as Athletic Superintendent in the Department of Recreation in Winston Salem, retiring in 1985. During his professional life, Bert also served as President of the Winston-Salem Host Lions Club.
Along with his family, softball was a great love in Bert’s life; he spent much of his adult life supporting and developing opportunities for amateur softball to flourish around the world. He was a member of the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) from 1959 until 2005, traveling the world as an ambassador and organizer of softball events – with the ASA, he organized clinics in Czech Republic, England, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe. He also spent six years on the Executive Board of the International Softball Federation. In recognition of his service, Bert was inducted into the NC ASA Hall of honor in 1985 and the national ASA Hall of honor in 1989. Perhaps his proudest achievement was his role as the first-ever competition manager for women’s softball in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
A memorial service will be held at Ardmore United Methodist Church on Friday, January 28 at 1:00 pm, arranged by Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home. The family requests donations be made to Ardmore United Methodist Church in Winston Salem in lieu of flowers.
