David 'Dave' Lee Smith

KERNERSVILLE - David ""Dave"" Lee Smith, 67, a loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away Wednesday, January 11, 2012. He was born May 12, 1944 in Peoria, IL to the late Roy and Shirley Thornton Smith. Dave attended Lewistown Community High School in Lewistown, Ill., and Midstate College in Peoria; completed apprenticeships at the Chicago Board of Trade and International Harvester to become a certified Tool and Die Maker. He spent most of his career and retired from International Harvester/Navistar. He was a talented woodworker, artisan, and furniture maker; loved all sports; and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball and Duke Blue Devils basketball fan, but one of his greatest loves were his four legged friends, Abby and Bear. Surviving are his wife of 30 years, Carol Daley Smith of the home; two sons, David ""Tim"" Smith and wife, Terri of High Point, Robert ""Todd"" Smith and, wife Stephanie of Kernersville; two daughters, Angela Ilene Underwood and husband, Steve of Kernersville, Amanda Ayers Gordon and, husband Edward of Kernersville; grandchildren, Anna Grace Underwood, Sophia Carol Gordon, Madison Rose Smith, Tyler David Smith, William ""Michael"" Utt and wife, Amy, all of Kernersville; great-grandchild, Ashlynn Pippa Utt; brothers and sisters, Steve Smith and wife, Monica of Lewistown, Ill., Chris Smith of Atlanta, Ga. and Linda Smith Reneau and husband, Harry of Groveland, Ill.; he also leaves many friends, cousins, nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Saturday, January 14, 2012 at Friedland Moravian Church with Pastor Carol Foltz and Pastor Gene Davis officiating. The family will receive friends at 1:00 pm at the church prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in his memory to AARF, 311 Harvey St., Winston Salem, NC 27103.
