David Joe Smith

Winston Salem-David Joe Smith, 83, passed away Thursday, September 03, 2015. He was born September 3, 1932 in Forsyth Co. to the late Clifton Hersley and Claudia Weavil Smith. David attended Glenn View Baptist Church, served in the United States Army and was a volunteer fireman for over 35 years with Beeson Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department. He retired from the city of Winston Salem Utilities Division. David was an inventor; he held a US patent for one of his many creations. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Renee' Smith and a brother, Pleasant H. Smith. Surviving are his beloved wife of 59 years, Betty Jo Carter Smith; two sons, Dwight Smith and wife, Elaine, Brent Smith and wife, Christine; three grandchildren, Sara (Tyler) Richardson, Baily Smith and Jared Smith; two sisters, Willo Mae Watson and Duanna Nichols. A Funeral Service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 5, 2015 at Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel with the Rev. Brad Wright officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
