David "Casey" Shumate

Kernersville - Mr. David ""Casey"" Shumate, 65, passed away September 7, 2015 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. He was born November 26, 1949 in Pearisburg, VA to the late Naomi Jean Riddle and William Wirt Shumate. David was a former Marine. He loved fishing and golf, and cooking outside in his outdoor kitchen for his friends and family. He coached Pop Warner Football in Kernersville, and was an umpire for softball at the Swaim Fields. He was an avid Redskins, NY Yankees and NC State fan. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Randall ""Randy"" Shumate.
Surviving are his wife, Brenda Shumate of 38 years, a son Drew Shumate and wife Liz, four sisters, Betty Dillon and husband Bobby, Sherri Curry and husband Randy, Kathy Lemmons and husband Jay, Sam Gleason and husband Jeff, a brother Jimmy Shumate, five nieces, Ashley, Candace, Sonya, Randi Lynn, Emma, and two nephews, Scott Dillon, and Mark Lemmons. Casey was loved by all who knew him, and leaves behind many extended family and friends.
The family will receive friends from 4-6 PM Saturday evening, September 12, 2015 at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel.
