David Charley Sams

David Charley Sams, age 91, of Winston-Salem passed away on Friday, January 31, 2025. 

He was born on October 2, 1933 to Lillie Joyce and Walter Raleigh Sams in Stokes County, NC. 

David attended schools in Winston-Salem in his youth. He joined the US Air Force from 1953-1961, serving eight years as an Airman, First Class mechanic for the C-124 Globemaster aircraft as part of the 14th Troop Carrier Squadron of Donaldson Air Force Base in Greenville, SC. He met the love of his life, Daphine Dovie Beaver in November 1955 and they were married on March 31,1956. David worked for RJR Tobacco Company in Winston-Salem as a chief repairman, retiring in 1987. He was a member of the WS Loyal Order of the Moose, a lifetime member of the VFW and American Legion. He attended Bethabara Moravian Church. 

David was an avid bowler, loved NASCAR racing, visiting casinos, traveling, and going on cruises with his wife. 

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, one sister, Ruby Gentle, and three brothers, JW, Billy and Richard. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Daphine, and a brother, Bob. In addition, he is survived by five children and their spouses; Curtis Tory (Cheryl), Tara Cleveland (Eddie), David Jr. (Cindy), Aaron (Nancy) and Kellee Horne (Andy). He also leaves behind five beloved grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. 

There will be a graveside service to commemorate his life on Wednesday, February 5, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons, NC.

Memorials in his memory may be made to Bethabara Moravian Church at 2100 Bethabara Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27106 or a charity of your choice.
