Lt. Col. David Leroy Nolting, USAF, (Ret), passed away Saturday, May 13, 2017 at his home in Advance, NC with his family at his side. He was born July 4, 1940 in Atchison, Kansas to Fredrick Wilhelm Gustav Nolting and Alma Wehking Nolting. He graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy on June 9, 1965 and married his high school sweetheart Margaret Jean Nichols of Nortonville, Kansas on June 12, 1965. He served as a C-130 pilot in the Vietnam War, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross. He later served as a C-5 pilot, earned his Masters in Aeronautical Engineering from the U.S.A.F. Institute of Technology, and ultimately retired after 22 years of service. He then served as a Flight Test Engineer for Boeing and retired after 17 years of service. He was diagnosed with metastatic pancreatic cancer on March 22, chose living instead of fighting death, and wrote to dear friends he was ""determined to remain in good spirits"". He fulfilled his determination in those 55 days. He died just how he lived: loving, gentle, thoughtful, protective, not complaining, sharing laughter, and demonstrating remarkable strength. His hope was in heaven because of the grace received by his faith in his Lord Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8). One of his favorite Bible verses was 1 Corinthians 13:12 ""For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known."" Now he sees and knows the glory of heaven and his Savior. He is sorely missed by his wife; one son, Darin (Gwen) Nolting of Clemmons, NC; one daughter, Kimberly (Kirk, LTC, MC, FS, USAF) Milhoan of Kihei, HI; two grandsons, Daniel Nolting and Drew Milhoan; his brother Manfred (late Francys) Nolting; his sister Joan (Dale) Bird; and four generations of numerous other family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Sydonia (William) Leighton, and his brother W.F. Nolting. A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday, May 20, 2017 at Augsburg Lutheran Church by Pastor Daniel Pugh. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either Augsburg Lutheran Church or the international medical ministry ForHeartsandSouls.org. Online condolences may be made at www.hayworth-miller.com
