Kernersville - Mr. David Pegram Matthews, 78, passed away Saturday, September 26, 2015 at Trinity Glen Nursing Home. David was born on March 15, 1937 in Forsyth County to the late Carl Eugene and Lake Rush Pegram Matthews. David worked as a farmer and was a lover of the land. He was a former president of the Forsyth County Farm Bureau and a member of the State Farm Bureau Board. He also served as the director of Farm Credit and was awarded the Conservation Family of the Year award from Forsyth Soil and Water. David was a life-long member of Sedge Garden United Methodist Church and founding member of the Manuel Class.
Surviving are his high-school sweetheart and wife of 58 years, Shirley Matthews of the home; a son, Lee Matthews (Donna); a daughter, Lou Ann Reid; four grandchildren, Blake Matthews, Justin, Jamie and Jared Reid; and one brother, Carl Matthews, Jr.
A funeral service will be held at 3:30 pm Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at Sedge Garden United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Monday, September 28, 2015 at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel.
