David Curtis James, age 88, of Winston-Salem, NC passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, January 30, 2022. David was born on January 2, 1934, in Stokes County to the late Grace and Bowlie James. Raised on a farm, he quickly learned the value of hard work by raising tobacco and doing the daily farm chores. He also worked at the sawmill and drove a school bus while in high school. In 1953 David was drafted into the US Army an served for 2 years during the time of the Korean War. In July of 1955 David married Nancy Tilley in Conway, SC. After returning home from the military he worked for Hanover Foods, Hanes Hosiery, and eventually retired from RJ Reynolds in 1995 with 28 years of service. David was a dedicated employee at RJR, taking pride in always having high scores of his unit at Whitaker Park. He enjoyed coin-collecting, kart racing with his son, and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a family man, a gentle soul and a friend to all. David was of the Baptist faith an attended Woodland Baptist Church as long as his physical health allowed. David was preceded in death in 2011 by his loving wife of 56 years, Nancy; an infant daughter, Deborah Lee; and a infant son, Ricky Lane. He also was proceeded in death by a brother, Edward James and a sister, Anna Belle Bullins. He is survived by a daughter, Chris (Jeff) Hinkle of Lewisville; and a son, Michael (Wendy) of Pfafftown; three grandchildren, Trey Phelps of Lewisville, Brooke (Dylan) Phillips of W-S, and Logan James of Pfafftown; 2 great grandchildren, Payton Glenn and Willow Phillips; Sisters, Patsy (Jimmy) Fulp and Linda (Henry) Mabe, both of Walnut Cove, Judy (James) Manual of Germanton, and Teresa Collins of Clemmons; and a brother, Donald of Tobaccoville; also several nieces and nephews. A special thank you goes to his special caregivers, Janice Robertson, Deborah Evans and Deboraha (Tee-Te) Evans for the unbelievable comfort and care that he was given over the last 5 years of his life. He loved each one of you. Also, a special thank you to the ladies of Wellcare Hospice of Advance for their help over the last 4 months. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 pm, Wednesday, February 2, 2022, with Reverend Myers Tilley officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall. The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Parkinson Disease Foundation or a Hospice organization of your choice.
