DODSON - TOBACCOVILLE David Wayne Dodson passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on October 1, 2011 after a brief illness, at the age of 72. He was born on November 18, 1938 in Winston-Salem, NC the son of Marguerite McDaniel and Howard Anderson Dodson. He attended Mineral Springs Elementary and High School and was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church. David married Bonnie Leonard in 1956 and three girls were born, Lou Ann, Laurie Kay and Lana Sue. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Reserves and was honorably discharged in 1957 and then he joined the U.S. Air Force in 1957. He received the Air Force Accommodation medal (2) Oak Leaf Clusters, Presidential Unit Citation, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, National Defense Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal (3) OLC, Good Conduct Medal (1) OLC, A. F. Longevity Award (4) OLC, Vietnam Service Medal, and Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon. The rank of Master Sergeant was attained and he retired after 23 ½ years of service to his country in 1978. On June 3, 1979, David was married to Patricia Allen. David enjoyed woodworking, gardening, chess and a good poker game. He was a current member of the American Legion Post 290 for eleven years and a past member of the Rural Hall Volunteer Fire Department, The Elks Lodge and the Moose Lodge. He was quite the practical joker, which ran in his family. His children loved for him to play monster with them and for him to goose their neck and knees as they screamed and laughed. Mr. Dodson was preceded in death by his parents, Marguerite and Howard Dodson; and one nephew, Mark Douglas Dodson. David is survived by his wife, Patricia M. Dodson; three daughters, Lou Ann Jarrett (Kenny), Laurie Kay Martin and Lana Street (David); seven grandchildren, Keith Campbell, Jordon Jarrett, Shannon Martin, Sarah Overby, Matthew Street, Elizabeth Street and Karlie Street; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Jerry Lehman Dodson (Shirley); one sister, Patricia Woodring (Larry); one niece, Kim Lynn; one nephew, Brien Woosley; and many other fond relatives. A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, October 7 at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel with the Rev. Gary Sanders officiating. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 290. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, October 6 at the funeral home.
