David Cowan Barber, Sr.

WINSTON-SALEM-Mr. David Cowan Barber, Sr., 79, of Winston-Salem, passed away on Saturday, May 12, 2012 at his home. Mr. Barber was born on May 14, 1932 in Winston-Salem to the late Robert and June Krider Barber. He was a retired Machinist from AT&T. Mr. Barber was a member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church for 62 years and he was known for his handshake and smile. Preceding him in death along with his parents are his brothers, Austin McGuire, Sr., R.B. Barber, and Jack Krider Barber; two sisters-in-law, Hazel McGuire and Doris McGuire. Surviving Mr. Barber are his wife of almost 59 years, Carolyn Hice Barber; daughter Cynthia Barber Smart (Robert); two sons, David Barber, Jr. ""Bucky"" and Thomas Barber (Beth); grandchildren, Joy Hinson, Steven Hinson, Sarah Barber, Katie Barber, and Timothy Chandler; great-grandchildren, Chelsea Hinson and Caleb Thompson; three brothers, Ed McGuire, Paul Barber (Virginia) and Krider Barber (Edie); two sisters-in-law, Ethel Barber and Peggy Barber; and numerous nieces, nephews, and special friends. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at New Philadelphia Moravian Church with the Rev. Dr. Worth Green officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Monday, May 14, 2012 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family would like to extend a special thank you to all of their extended family members and friends for their loving care and support. The family would also like to thank Dr. Tom Grote, Danielle, Debbie, Rita, Diane and the entire staff at P.H.O.A.; his girls, Julie Pope and Kathy Bowman, the G.I. Nurse Navigators at the Derrick L. Davis Regional Cancer Center; Radiation Oncology, and 9th West Tower Oncology for their care. A special word of thanks to Branson and Erica and the entire hospice team, ""Well done thy good and faithful servant.""
