WINSTON-SALEM - Mr. Daniel Ertner went to be with the Lord on December 24, 2011. He is survived by his son, James D. Ertner and wife Ruth Petty Ertner of Greensboro, NC; his daughter, Janet D. Ertner of Winston-Salem; a granddaughter, Gail Ertner Lillard and great-grandson, Bryce Tetreault of Yarmouth, Maine. His wife Ruby preceded him in death on May 28, 2011, one day before their 69th wedding anniversary. Mr. Ertner was born on April 21, 1919, in Portland, Tennessee, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and physics from Wheaton College in 1940. While an undergraduate, he was president of Sigma Pi Sigma, the national physics honor society. He later continued his education at the University of Minnesota and Northwestern University. Mr. Ertner began his 41-year career at Western Electric Company in February 1941 as a quality assurance engineer at the Hawthorne (Chicago) Works. He soon advanced to the management ranks with positions of section chief at the Buffalo (New York) Plant, department chief of staff at the St. Paul (Minnesota) Plant, department chief at the Omaha (Nebraska) Works, labor relations department head at the Kearny (New Jersey) Works, assistant manager of accounting and industrial relations back at the Buffalo Plant, comptroller of the Buffalo Plant, manager of benefit administration and then director of salary administration and management resources development at headquarters in New York City. Finally, he was promoted to General Manager, Human Resources Development (Administrative Officer) in Western Electric's Human Resources and Labor Relations Division at the Guilford Center in Greensboro, North Carolina. Church was an important part of Mr. Ertner's life. He served as both a deacon and then an elder at Westover Church in Greensboro from 1975 to 2000, during which time his wife Ruby was organist. He was also active in organizations such as Gideons International, Christian Business Men's Committee of Greensboro, and Baptist Life Association. Upon his retirement in 1982, he became involved in his beloved ""Timothy Ministry"" work (in which he mentored men new to the Christian faith) and the Prison Ministry at Sandy Ridge Correctional Center. A graveside service will be conducted at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at Forsyth Memorial Park. There will also be a memorial service at 11:00 AM on Thursday, December 29, 2011 at Westover Church, corner of Muirs Chapel and Tower Roads in Greensboro.
