On Thursday August 13, Curtis Fred Stogdale of Clemmons, formerly of Winston-Salem, passed away at home peacefully in his sleep from complications of COPD with pneumonia with his devoted wife by his side. He was the only child of Fred F. and Nellie T. Stogdale of Staunton, VA who predeceased him. He is the son-in-law of George D. and Virginia S. Boswell of Wilson, who predeceased him. Loving husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Mary Jo Boswell Stogdale; daughters, Marla Tucker, Susan Peake and Tanya Darnell; a son, John M. (Jennifer) Stogdale; his eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren; his loving and devoted friend, Lowell Hodel; his faithful companion, Mindy Jo and numerous cousins in the Staunton, VA area. Curtis attended Robert E. Lee High School in Staunton, VA and Richmond Professional Institute in Richmond, VA. He spent more than 20 years in retail sales as a salesman and shoe buyer starting as a teenager. He spent 40 years as an insurance salesman working for Pilot Life and Mutual of New York, finally becoming an independent agent. Curtis was of the Methodist faith and truly loved his country. He was a former Elk and member of the Life Underwriters Association. He volunteered for the Salvation Army as long as his health allowed. Traveling, especially to France, reading and working mind-bending puzzles were his hobbies. He also loved designing home projects. A Celebration of Life will be conducted at 2:00 pm Saturday, August 15, 2009 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Paul Mullen officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Entombment will be held at 2:30 pm Sunday, August 16, 2009 at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Wilson, NC.
