Curtis Wayne 'Chub' Smith

Winston Salem - Curtis Wayne ""Chub"" Smith, 82, died of lung cancer Sunday, July 17, 2011 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born March 2, 1929 in Forsyth Co. to the late Curtis Ray and Annie Hayworth Smith. Chub served in the Korean Conflict from Feb. 19, 1951 to March 31, 1953. He achieved the rank of corporal and was honorably discharged with two purple hearts. He married Jeanie Lee Hughes Smith June 30, 1956. They enjoyed 30 years of marriage before she died in 1986. Chub worked with his father and brothers as a carpenter for several years, and he also enjoyed farming and raising tobacco. Chub and his father retired and opened Smith's Lake. In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by his brother, Van Dale Smith, sister and brother-in-law, Peggy Ann Conrad and Robert A. Conrad. Surviving are three sisters, Jean S. Clodfelter and husband, Norman, Vickie S. Rothrock and husband, David, Linda S. Murray and husband, Craig; two brothers, Derris H. Smith and wife, Rachel, Bobby E. Smith and wife, Jane; sister-in-law, Nancy P. Smith; two aunts, Mary Helen Craver and Madge H. Carrico; eighteen nieces and nephews and several cousins. A Graveside Service will be conducted with Military Honors 11:00 am Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with Rev. Joe McWethy officiating. The family will receive friends from 7-9:00 pm Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at Hayworth Miller Kernersville Chapel. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane,Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family would like to thank his caregivers from Home Loving Senior Care, the staff at Kate B.
