Curtis Raymond Mays, age 77, of Kernersville, NC, born youngest of nine children to David Ralph Mays and Zennie Lou Carter Mays, passed away at his home after an extended illness on June 8, 2023.
Curtis was called to serve in Vietnam in 1966-67 in the 11th Armored Calvary “Blackhorse” Regiment where he received the following commendations: the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge, and the Expert Badge M-14 Rifle. After Vietnam, Curtis joined the ranks of the United States Postal Service, working his way up from a mail carrier in Huntington, WV to Postmaster in Mullins, WV, South Boston, VA, Danville, VA, Beckley, WV, Gastonia, NC and finally Manager of Post Office Operations in Jacksonville, FL.
After retiring to Winston Salem to be near his daughters and grandchildren, Curtis continued to enjoy square dancing, dealing in antiques, and his beloved canines. While dancing he met his wife, Dr. Margaret Walker Ray. Curtis attended Mt. Lebanon Primitive Baptist Church in Durham County, NC.
He leaves behind his wife, Margaret; his 4 canine “Girls”; one sister, Phyllis Zahn of Mentor, OH; and two daughters, Sandy Cave (Stevie) and Felicia Walls (Henry); and grandchildren, Adam and Belle Cave, Taylor, Jerod, and Natalie Walls.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, June 11, 2023, with a visitation one hour prior at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel. The interment will be held 11:00 AM, Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at Salisbury National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Forsyth Humane Society located at 4881 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.
