Colonel Dan E. Andrew

Colonel Dan E. Andrew of Winston-Salem and formerly a long-time resident of both Park Ridge and Woodstock, Illinois, died on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2013. He was 93. Dan lived with an uncommon zest for life - greeting friends and new acquaintances alike with a smile and firm handshake - and holding true to the ideals of integrity, honesty, love of his family, and love of his country. He was born in Nebraska in 1919, moving to the small town of Woodstock, Illinois in 1925. Dan earned his accounting degree at age 20 from the University of Illinois as a member of the last ROTC class of the Army Horse Calvary, and served during World War II supervising the making of munitions. He returned to active duty again during the Korean War and remained in the Army Reserve until 1979, leaving as a full colonel. Dan earned his MBA from the University of Chicago and held a variety of executive positions including working in his family's business - R.O. Andrew Company - in Woodstock, as an accountant for General Electric, and ultimately as president and chairman of the board of Des Plaines National Bank. He and his wife, Lorena, moved from Woodstock to Park Ridge, Illinois, in 1968, and then returned to Woodstock following Dan's retirement in 1986. The two moved to Winston-Salem in 2000, where Lorena passed away a few months later following a brief illness. Dan was a resident of Brighton Gardens until his death. He received numerous awards and honors throughout his life - including being named ""Man of the Year"" in Woodstock three times - and was champion of the Woodstock Country Club three times. Dan and Lorena traveled widely, including taking several memorable trips to Mainland China when that nation was just being opened to U.S. visitors. A primary focus of his later years was maintaining close contact with his extended family and friends through phone calls, traveling to family celebrations, and correspondence. He also researched his family genealogy over many generations. In all of his activities, he was grateful for the help of his long-time personal assistant, Maggie Werkman, her husband, Mark, and their children, Meghan and Mark Jr. Dan was very proud of his three children: Ray (Susan), Lynne (Francis) and John (Lori), as well as his six grandchildren: Justin, Brian, Kate, Sarah, Joe, and Lindsay. In addition, he is survived by his first cousin, Lloyd B. Andrew, Jr. - who was like a brother to him. A graveside memorial service with military honors will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Pfafftown Christian Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Forsyth County Mental Health Association, 1509 S. Hawthorne Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27101.
