Clyde Ward Southern Sr.

SOUTHERN Rural Hall - Mr. Clyde Ward Southern, Sr. passed away Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born September 20, 1931 in Forsyth County to the late James Southern and Ethel Mae Kiger Southern. Mr. Southern proudly served 19 years in the National Guard and retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company with 37 years of service. He was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church where he was a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. Mr. Southern loved sports; especially bowling, golf and horseshoes. In 1993 he won the World Horseshoe Tournament in NY and in 1994 he was inducted into the NC Horseshoe Pitchers Hall of Fame. Mr. Southern loved his church, family and friends. He also loved drinking coffee with his buddies at Hardees. In addition to his parents, Mr. Southern was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Jester Southern; five brothers; and two sisters. Surviving are one daughter, Cindy Southern Flinchum (Gray) of Clemmons; two sons, Clyde ""Bubba"" Southern Jr. (Kathy) of Advance and Jon Southern of Rural Hall; two grandchildren, Macy Lee Flinchum of Clemmons and Erica Lynn Lineberry (Stephen) of Raleigh; one great-grandson, Canaan Ray Lineberry; and one special cousin, Betty Sumner. A Funeral Service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, June 11 at Pleasant View Baptist Church with Pastor David Harmon officiating. Burial will follow at Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be to Hospice & Palliative Care Center, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the staff of Hospice for the wonderful care given to Mr. Southern.
