Clyde Harshaw Dula

Mr. Clyde Harshaw Dula, 90, of Winston-Salem passed away Saturday, August 31, 2013 at Bermuda Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Advance. He was born December 20, 1922 in Durham, N.C. to Clyde Harshaw and Frances Webb Dula. After graduating from Benhaven High School, he attended Louisburg College. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Marine Corps First Air Wing in the Solomon Islands and North China. Later, during the Korean Conflict, he was Operations NCO for Cherry Point Marine Air Station. Between the wars and after Korea, he worked for Western Electric in Purchasing in Winston-Salem. In 1957, he left Western Electric to enter the manufacturer's representative field. In 1960, he formed his own firm, a business at which he remained fully involved until December of 2012. A steadfast member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church for 59 years, Clyde was active at many levels of his church. At one time or another he served multiple terms on the Board of Trustees, the Board of Elders, and as a delegate to the Synod of the Moravian Church, Southern Province. He was also the founder and for many years the teacher of the Advent Sunday School Class, and was especially known throughout New Philadelphia for his phone calls to each and every member, young and old, on their birthdays. In addition, as Head Usher he shook the hand of every person through the door on his side of the church on Sunday mornings and almost every special service for decades. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Helen Alley Dula, in 2003. Surviving are two sons, Stephen Dula and wife, Gail of High Point, and Ronald Dula and wife, Kathleen of Austin, Tx; 10 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; a brother, Alfred Dula of Durham, N.C.; and a sister, Jean Fletcher of Scottsdale, Az. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, September 7, 2013 at New Philadelphia Moravian Church with Dr. Worth Green officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Memorials may be made to New Philadelphia Moravian Church, 4440 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27104 or to Laurel Ridge Moravian Campground, c/o the same address.
