Clay Howard Koontz, 63, passed away on Friday, September 1, 2023, due to complications from dementia. He was born on Feb. 11, 1960, in Albemarle, NC.
Clay was a curious and adventurous child who loved to play outside. He was an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America, and he enjoyed spending time in nature, both on land and in the water. His favorite mode of transportation was either on the family's pony, Grayboy, or on one of several different motorcycles he owned.
After attending Stanly Community College, he worked in telecommunications throughout his career. Work in fiber optics allowed him to train in Japan for 6 months which was a source of pride. He also had a passion for SCUBA diving, and he worked as a divemaster in the Florida Keys for several years.
Clay was a kind and generous person who always had a smile on his face. He loved to laugh and make people laugh, and he had a knack for making friends. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Clay is survived by his mother, Lucille Jordan Koontz; his father, Richard Howard Koontz; his brothers, David Anderson Koontz and Hoyle Jordan Koontz; and his partner, Holly King.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
